چکیده

Venn diagrams, flow charts, tree structures, node networks, to name just a few-or to the great lengths that computer companies go to advertise the graphic capabilities of their products, to see that charts and graphs have enormous appeal to people. All of this is true despite the fact that in virtually every case, the same information can be communicated by nonpictorial means: tables of numbers, lists of propositions cross-referI ! enced by global variables, labeled bracketings, and so on. Perhaps pictorial displays are simply pleasing to the eye, but both introspection and experimental evidence (Carter, 1947; Culbertson & Powers, 1959; Schutz, l%la, I

An Activity Theory Perspective on the Role of Cooperative Assessment in the Reading Comprehension of Iranian EFL Learners

Reading comprehension has recently been reconceptualized in EFL reading instruction to foreground the importance of putting a social perspective on learning. Developed as a crucial aspect of Vygotskian sociocultural theory, activity theory views reading as a socially-mediated activity, for which the prerequisite cognitive processes are distributed among teacher, individual reader, other student...

Iranian EFL Learners' Perception of the Efficacy of Activity Theory-based Reading Comprehension

Any language classroom is a distinctive learning context offering numerous affordances that might be perceived effectively, remain unnoticed, or even act as constraints. Therefore, exploring students' perception toward a particular method of instruction is crucial since it may produce a reliable piece of evidence for teachers to confirm or refute the effectiveness of the intended instructional ...

Impact of External Representation and Task on Graph Comprehension

This study examined the relationship between the external representation, verbal encoding vs. visual encoding, of graph information and the impact on graph comprehension. Graph comprehension tasks included responses to true/false statements addressing global and local graph information, visual recognition, and graph drawing. The findings suggest that the specific modality of the external repres...

Reverse mathematics of some topics from algorithmic graph theory

This paper analyzes the proof-theoretic strength of an infinite version of several theorems from algorithmic graph theory. In particular, theorems on reachability matrices, shortest path matrices, topological sorting, and minimal spanning trees are considered. For finite graphs, polynomial time algorithms can be used to find reachability matrices, shortest path matrices, topological sortings an...

Task-Induced Involvement in L2 Vocabulary Learning: A Case for Listening Comprehension

The study aimed at investigating whether the retention of vocabulary acquired incidentally is dependent upon the amount of task-induced involvement. Immediate and delayed retention of twenty unfamiliar words was examined in three learning tasks( listening comprehension + group discussion, listening comprehension + dictionary checking + summary writing in L1, and listening comprehension + dictio...

Solving a nurse rostering problem considering nurses preferences by graph theory approach

Nurse Rostering Problem (NRP) or the Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP) is a complex scheduling problem that affects hospital personnel on a daily basis all over the world and is known to be NP-hard.The problem is to decide which members of a team of nurses should be on duty at any time, during a rostering period of, typically, one month. It is very important to efficiently utilize time and effort, ...
